The Type 56 assault rifle is the Chinese variant of the Russian designed and produced AK-47 and AKM assault rifles. The gun first began production in 1956 at State Factory 66 and continued so until 1973. Since then, the responsibility of its manufacture has been handled by Norinco who continues to produce the rifle primarily for export.
